West Mineral, Kansas is a small town located in Cherokee County in the southeastern part of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 178. The town is named after the nearby deposits of lead and zinc minerals. West Mineral was incorporated in 1905 and became a boomtown during the early 1900s due to the mining industry. Today, the town is known for its mining history and has several mining museums and attractions, such as the Big Brutus, a retired Bucyrus-Erie 1850B electric shovel that is now a museum. West Mineral is also home to a community park, and several annual events, including the Old Settlers' Day festival.
